Shaking a Box of Sand
– We present a simple model of a vibrated box of sand, and discuss its dynamics in terms of two parameters reflecting static and dynamic disorder respectively. The fluidised, intermediate and frozen (‘glassy’) dynamical regimes are extensively probed by analysing the response of the packing fraction to steady, as well as cyclic, shaking, and indicators of the onset of glassy behaviour are analy...
متن کاملVisualization of mixing processes in a heterogeneous sand box aquifer.
Mixing is increasingly recognized as a critical process for understanding and modeling reactive transport. Yet, mixing is hard to characterize because it depends nonlinearly on concentrations. Visualization of optical tracers in the laboratory at high spatial and temporal resolution can help advance the study of mixing processes. The solute distribution is obtained by analyzing the relationship...
متن کاملPerformance of Rocking Systems on Shallow Improved Sand: Shaking Table Testing
Recent studies have highlighted the potential benefits of inelastic foundation response during seismic shaking. According to an emerging seismic design scheme, termed rocking isolation, the foundation is intentionally under-designed to promote rocking and limit the inertia transmitted to the structure. Such reversal of capacity design may improve the seismic performance, drastically increasing ...

426 nature materials | VOL 7 | JUNE 2008 | www.nature.com/naturematerials the observation that most multiferroics are ferroelectric antiferromagnets, Binek and Doudin9 suggested focusing on exchange bias, the directional coupling occurring at the interface between a ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet. This proposal triggered much activity in the search for exchange bias using multiferroics, its...

Thermoviridin appeared to be an organic acid which was dialyzable. The antibiotic showed maximum absorption in the range of 268 to 272 m,u. Thermoviridin was primarily active against the gram positive bacteria tested. A preliminary toxicity test in mice, consisting of a single intraperitoneal injection of 32 mg of material which had 25 thermoviridin units per mg, did not cause death in any case.
